Grandma Birrell's Candy Cane Cookies

1/2 c. shortening
1/2 butter
1 c. powder sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix thoroughly.

Sift together and stir in:
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. salt

Divide dough into halves. Blend into one half 1/2 tsp. red food coloring. Roll 1tsp. each color dough into strips 4" long. Place strips together and twist like a rope. Place cookies on ungreased cookie sheet. Curve top down to form handle of cane. Bake about 9 minutes at 375. remove with spatula while warm. Sprinkle with 1/2 c. peppermint candy and 1/2c. sugar.

This is one recipe that Jamie makes us use every Christmas. Sometimes we get lazy and they don't always end up looking like candy canes.

We have to make them every year as well. I often just take some of each color and press them together and them roll them into a long roll and cut them in pieces and form a candy cane hook.
